EXPLORATION OF THE GLOBE
By Sushma
College Board Theme
Theme 1: Interactions Between Humans and The Environment
This objective would relate to this theme because Europeans were improving their ways of going overseas. And with what technology they already had they were advancing or modifying it in order for them to achieve their goals or to facilitate trade. If Europeans were not to have this technology they have acquired then the goals they have set for themselves would fail, as well as their expeditions, and also the fact the world might be different today. The technology allowed them to sail to different regions of the world.
Comparison
Europe and Holy Roman Empire
As the Europeans continued on their expeditions they also encountered and created new technology from what they saw or already know. They created things such as the sails, astrolabe, cross staff, magnetic compass to help them travel further than they have, make trips more faster and efficient, and to discover new things. This is kind of like in the Holy Roman Empire where agriculture was one of the main aspects in the empire. The opening of new lands to cultivate improved agricultural techniques, the use of tools and technologies, and the introduction of new crops. With already the knowledge of agricultural tools the introduction horseshoe and horse collar made the work easier for them do.
Quest for Resources
- Mariners went on explorations in search of resources
- Created plantations on Atlantic islands and other places
- In order for to go long distances, they needed a boat that would carry all supplies
- Would create more efficient ships that decrease time travel
- Mariners need technology, strong-holding ships, and techniques in order to sail back and forth
Trade Routes
- Establish new trade routes to the markets of Asia
- New maritime trade routes would increase the quantities of spices and other Asian goods and have enormous profits
- A sizable boat needed to be created in order to carry abundant amount of supplies
- Sailing on sea was much better than moving on land
Missionary Impluse
- The set goal of spreading Christianity to more regions led Europeans into a larger world than they are used to
- Missionaries were trying to find ways to spread their faith
- New Testament encouraged Christians to spread their religion throughout other regions of the world
- Missionaries traveled far to India, Central Asia, and China to search for converts
- Going overseas gave them another way to spread their beliefs

Volta Do Mar
- Stronger winds and currents forced Mariners to take long, indirect routes to their destinations
- Volta Do Mar: Used winds to go to a certain place and get another wind to go to exact destination: allowed them to not go against winds
- With experience, they learned sailing around contrary winds was more efficient and safer
